Facing Both Ways

Ruan O'Donnell reviewsDouble Traitors? The Belfast Volunteers and Yeomen, 1778-1828by Dr. Allan Blackstock, Belfast Society Publications (No.2), £5 pbk

ALLAN BLACKSTOCK'S pamphlet of 48 pages marks the second Belfast Society publication in this increasingly rare format.

The origins of the Volunteers and the political complications stemming from their often radical legacy are discussed with reference to the raising of the Belfast yeomanry in 1796-97. In so doing Blackstock highlights the utility of pamphlets for posing important historical questions which warrant further discussion.

The illustrations, while certainly well-selected, are poorly reproduced for the most part, although this failing is more thancompensated for by the surprisingly high quality of the cover and the binding.
