Revelations that the Government has only started the process to give “full effect in EU law” to the so-called legal guarantees on taxation policy, “right to life“, education and the family, military neutrality and workers' rights produced prior to the second Lisbon referendum to con sufficient enough numbers of Irish voters into voting Yes in a second referendum to the very same treaty that they had rejected in the first one does not augur well for its adherence to democratic and constitutional probity on the upcoming intergovernmental treaty..

-
When the so-called “dismal science” – economics — resorts to hollow metaphors like “contagion,” “belt-tightening,” “toxic,” or “tsunami” to describe economic facts and events, one might reasonably wonder if it represents dismay more than science. For sure, practitioners in this field eschew metaphors for technical jargon in their narrow academic studies that have earned many prizes and peer acclaim. But these studies have proven singularly unhelpful in explaining or resolving the four years of chaos that has befallen the global economy.

-
Looming large over the coming week that is what is set to have a huge impact on the lives of all the people of Ireland, or at least the 99% of Irish people. On Tuesday the 2nd of November $1,ooo,ooo,ooo of unguaranteed, unsecured private debt, come Anglo’s debt, come IRBC’s debt, come Central bank’s ELA’s debt, come the Irish Taxpayer’s debt, will be paid out by the Irish sovereign to meet the demands of Mr Trichet and his troika team with the passive consent of our elected Government. Countless more billions have flown and will continue to flow out of these banks, which the Irish public are paying for. The year 1981 was a time of anguish for Irish America. Every day the mass media reported the republican hunger strikers’ worsening health and agonizing deaths. Their heroic self-sacrifice was met by the cruel intransigence of the Thatcher government. Community outrage spurred something new in 1981. Top union leaders of Irish background or birth concluded that pious resolutions about non-discrimination and re-unification, passed at trade union conventions, were no longer enough. They wanted political action. They created an independent committee working within the U.S. trade unions, not taking its lead from any political party. Thus began the Irish American Labor Coalition.
