The government has been pushed to accept what it said it never would, a debate in Parliament about whether there should be a referendum on Britain's EU membership. The credit goes to the People's Pledge campaign and others who have pushed over the years to right a wrong. The People's Pledge has set out a three point plan to shift that debate up a gear and you can play your part.

Says the PP campaign:
"October 24th will be the day that parliament gets to decide if we should all have a say on where Britain's future lies. A week tomorrow, there will be a debate and then vote on whether there should be a referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU. This will be days after our Congress for an EU Referendum this Saturday in the heart of Westminster. The People’s Pledge campaign was first to break the news of the vote.
A number of MPs have claimed that their constituents do not care about having a say on our EU membership and may use this excuse to vote against the motion or abstain.
Here is what we need you to do.
STEP 1: Contact your MP
Contact your MP here ( http://www.writetothem.com/ ) – tell them that you have signed the People’s Pledge and that you want them to vote in favour of an EU referendum. Inform them that, through the People’s Pledge website, you will watch how they have voted and take this into account at the next general election.
Remember you must give your name and address so that your MP can respond.
STEP 2: Attend our referendum Congress this Saturday.
Join 2,000 supporters this Saturday in Westminster at the Methodist Central Hall for our groundbreaking Congress for an EU Referendum. The event comes just days before the historic vote in Parliament, with over 40 speakers including journalists, politicians, trade unionists and many more. If you would like to attend, please go to http://peoplespledge.org/congress_2011.
STEP 3: Join us in lobbying Parliament on Thursday 24th October.
The People’s Pledge are holding an official lobby of Parliament on the 24th of October and we would like you to attend. We have secured permission for our supporters to join a group lobby of MPs in person before the vote in Parliament. To do this you must arrive at 10:30am at St Stephen’s Entrance and join the queue.
The next few days are vital and we need as many of you to get involved as possible. To generate maximum pressure on MPs don’t just complete one of these steps; please do all three, and bring this to the attention of CP supporters, workmates and trade union and community activists.
